Moving Boxes? Get Them Down To A Science!
Whether you’ve finally found the house of your dreams or just need to pack
some things away for the time being until further notice, one of the
biggest moving nightmares is the amount of boxes you might be moving from
one place to another. Too many moving boxes will create confusion as well
as unnecessary expenditure if you are not doing it yourself. No matter how
much effort you’ve put into drawing up a list of what to pack and what to
get rid of, you will never know beforehand how many boxes you will
actually be moving.
If you want your move to be as hassle free as possible here are some tips
for streamlining the task of packing and moving boxes:
1) Take a rough inventory of the items you are going to pack into the
moving boxes well ahead of scheduled moving date;
2) When you have a fair idea of what you are going to pack into the moving
boxes always buy a few more boxes than you will actually need – most major
moving companies will buy back unused moving boxes if bought from them;
3) Buy moving boxes in various sizes and for the right purposes: nowadays
you can find moving boxes that are designed to carry flatware, glassware,
small kitchen appliances, etc., so there is no need to overstuff moving
boxes with too many items that could make them prone to breakage. The
moving company that you have chosen to handle your move is highly
specialized in boxes of all shapes and sizes;
4) Adding a lining of bubble wrap to the bottom of each moving box, even
if the items contained within each box are light, will protect your
belongings if they are exposed to wet or humid surfaces. Add another
cardboard layer to the bottom of larger moving boxes for extra support. As
with moving boxes, most big moving companies will actually buy back
whatever excess you don’t use;
5) Clearly label the outside of the moving boxes with their contents
(especially if fragile) in order to give priority to those boxes which
should be opened first. When actually transferring the boxes to the new
locations, always place the heaviest moving boxes on the bottom and the
lightest on top. Fragile items should be placed on a flat surface and away
from places that might have falling items nearby.
When actually taking inventory of the items to pack into the
moving boxes, you should go about it in the following way:
Pack well ahead of time into the moving boxes all the things that are not
necessary for day to day living up to moving day, such as decorations,
paintings, fine china, flatware, electronics/appliances that are not used
often, toys, out-of-season clothing.
When the time comes to actually move the clothing that you wear daily,
unless you want to pack endless suitcases, most movers will actually
supply you with moving boxes that are made into closets complete for
hanging clothes in – which is a great idea if you don’t want to iron
everything all over again.
Always keep a few moving boxes in all sizes open around the house so that
whenever you come across something you don’t need, pack it away
immediately. Always keep bubble wrap near each moving box and pick them up
every so often so that you can see how heavy they are.
Always try to pack like items together so that moving boxes you will not
have to open many moving boxes at once to find items of the same nature.
Finally, try to remember that if you’ve hired a company to handle your
move, the amount of moving boxes you have packed in excess can ultimately
increase the price of moving compared to what you first stipulated. If you
don’t want any surprises, then maybe it is best to hire a company that
does all the packing for you - they set the price once they evaluate your
belongings and then it is up to them to pack the number of required moving
boxes within the fee they’ve charged. And since they are pros at doing
what they do, they have their own methods for packing and moving boxes so
that you don’t have to worry about a thing. From the Styrofoam used to
pack tiny coffee cups to crates for moving grand pianos, all the space
used in moving boxes is used up wisely so that there is no weight
disparity between moving boxes.
